More than 100 million military personnel mobilized. Generally it was held to be on September 1,1939 with the invasion of Poland by the Nazi Germany (Adolf Hitler). Many countries were already at war by this date such as; Ethiopia and Italy. In 1945 the war ended in an allied victory. Even tho the Soviet Union and the U.S came out as two rival superpowers, setting the stage for the Cold war that lasted for the next 46 years!
